Control and Save – Presentation to SE CAN Forum 8 September 2015 Robert Marjoram Senior Account Development Executive

2 Control and Save is an innovative project to help social housing residents who are either in, or at risk of living in fuel poverty. Residents will be able to ‘take control’ of the energy that they use, by having a Connect smart heating control fitted into their home free of charge. ScottishPower will provide funding through their Warm Home Discount Obligation, to subsidise the cost of the Connect smart heating control package. The project will target social housing residents living in the 25% most deprived lower super output areas. The ScottishPower Development team will work closely with registered housing providers and installers to provide training and on-going support, such as follow up meetings and reports. Information will be used to evaluate the benefits of the Connect heating control, including how a better understanding of using energy more efficiently, has correlated to a reduction in energy usage. The challenge is to capture resident interest and encourage them to take control of the energy they use in their homes. What is Control and Save?

3 69% of households amend their heating schedules less than four times per year No controls / lack of understanding in how to use them leads to energy wastage and increased fuel-bill costs Householders often find controls difficult to program For Council / LA - Large number of preventable maintenance calls as a result The Consumer Problem

4 User-Friendly Hub with Remote Control Function The Solution

5 System consists of a Connect Control Hub, wireless sensor and the mobile app Remote heating controller for gas fired heating systems Heating / hot water controlled either on the Connect Hub in-home, or remotely via iOS / Android smart devices Compatible with most existing heating systems No requirement to be supplied by ScottishPower for Gas & Electricity Installation A wireless temperature sensor is fitted in place of the existing thermostat and communicates directly with the Control Hub Installation typically takes under 1 hour depending on the existing heating system Downloading the App The ScottishPower App is downloaded from www.scottishpower.co.uk, Google play or the App store on to the customers smart device – mobile or tabletwww.scottishpower.co.uk + + What is Connect?

6 The hub is the main controller for heating and hot water in the home. The simple design makes it easy to use and understand. Setting the heating or using any of the features just involves rotating the dial to display the function required and clicking the centre button to activate. Display shows current temperature of home Set the schedule Change the heating temperature Put the heating on hold Boost the heating Set the holiday mode The wireless sensor tells the hub the current temperature in the home. 8 8 New, innovative technology. Ease of use – based on on/off technology with pin clock design. Remote service use for social residents & home owners alike SIM operated – UK wide coverage with roaming SIM. Allows gathering of data and learning about how householders consume energy. Strategic value - potential to use the Hub for other services. Manufacturer has already noted that they have found a direct correlation between those using the App frequently and a reduction in boiler usage. ‘Push’ messages regarding usage can be activated through the technology. Benefits of Smart Heating Controllers

Increased comfort and convenience, control heating remotely from anywhere. Stops the heating of empty homes Easy boost function and control of ambient temperature Remote support from call centre team Relatives can help elderly, vulnerable and disabled residents via the remote app Benefits to Residents

10 Control their heating remotely when out of the house – concept of ‘controlling heating from their pocket’. Reduced energy bills and/or increased comfort – more control over their budget. Reduces the need to guess what time they are home in the evening. Multiple phone numbers can control the hub - these can be set up at time of install and also post install easily. 2 years free service of Connect Behaviour change – residents generally pick up the concept easily and engage with it themselves Benefits to Residents – Additional

11 Be one of the first Housing Providers to provide residents with smart heating controls allowing them to ‘take control’ of their heating Provision of new technology - free of charge Reports will be provided to evaluate how your residents use their heating Option to create alerts to housing provider for vulnerable residents, if heating hasn’t been activated for XX number of days Opportunity to capture additional details on install e.g. Age / type of boiler (possibly prevent boiler breakdown before it happens) Improved satisfaction from residents Universal use – SIM operated UK wide connection, so no need for broadband/WiFi Automatic seasonal clock change – Less call-outs to vulnerable residents Excellent PR opportunities and fits well with other Government drivers and policies Benefits to Registered Providers – Slide 1

12 Designed for ease of use when programming heating – may stop/reduce calls to housing providers regarding programming issues and can therefore potentially lower or avoid maintenance costs, preventing call- outs 2 year free remote service of Connect. If the remote service is not continued after 2 years, the housing provider will still benefit from the asset on the wall, which will continue to function as a manual control Technical customer support service available Numbers can be cleared remotely by Climote If the App remote service is not taken, the resident and housing provider will still benefit from a new smart heating controller which is easier to use and programme etc. Uniformity in heating control model used across housing stock Welfare reform – Benefits now paid directly to residents. Lower energy costs should help payment of bills to housing provider. Benefits to Registered Providers – Slide 2

13 Easy to install Universal fitting - fits on standard back plate One Box solution Ability to capture additional information whilst fitting Easier to set-up and explain to residents than other standard digital timers Strengthens relationships with their housing providers and could lead to further commercial opportunities Benefit to Contractors/Installers

14 Insight into residents heating usage behaviour Connect usage report – for the housing provider to review usage and target savings messages ( if appropriate) Aggregated reporting of residents in pilot with comparisons of different behaviours Comparison of actual behaviour v pre pilot behaviour ( from customer questionnaire ) Weekly alert on temperature changes within home where there are actions that are different to the norm – e.g. Resident has temperature set at 20 degrees for 4 weeks and then one week drops to an average 10 degrees Reporting

“Climote is so simple and easy to use, we have much more freedom to control our heating system, especially via the app. We’ve a new baby at home and my husband and I really notice the increased comfort and convenience of being able to boost the heating on the way home, or if we need to pop the heat on when getting up for a night feed. The great thing is the convenience and knowing that we are saving energy costs because the heating isn’t on when we are not here or when we don’t need it. With Climote, I know exactly when and for how long the home heating or hot water will be on for.” Claire Duffy, Louth County Council Resident Benefit to Residents
