N *0706.3.12Use linear equations to solve problems and interpret the meaning of slope, m, and the y-intercept, b, in f(x)= mx + b in terms of the context. S L O P E

HEY!!! What is SLOPE??? The slope (m) of a line is determined by any two points on the line. If given the coordinates (1,3) and (4,5) you can find the slope of the line that the two points are located on! How you say??? Use the rise run

Using Rise over Run The points again are (1,3) and (4,5) First find the slope of the line using the formula To use this formula you must identify what x 1, y 1, x 2, and y 2 are!! y 2 – y 1 x 2 – x 1 m =

Using the formula X 1 =1, y 1 = 3, x 2 = 4, y 2 = 5 Now plug the numbers in!! m = y 2 – y 1 x 2 – x 1 5 – 3 4 – 1 m = = 2323 So this is your answer!! Rise and Run!!

Slope of Lines There are different types of slopes. In the previous example, the slope of the line was positive! Lets graph the two points and look at the direction of the line!
