Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 1 The System Archetypes Simulation and Modeling Assignment 1 Date of Submission : 30 th Sept, 2005 Use the article “The System Archetypes” by William Braun (attached) & other related materials.

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 2 What are System Archetypes ? They describe common patterns of behaviour in organizations They provide underlying insight into the underlying structures from which behaviour over time and discrete events emerge. They alert managers to future unintended consequences. They challenge managers to consider the merits of fundamental solutions by making time an explicit variable in decision making.

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 3 Importance of System Archetypes Highly effective tools for gaining insight into patterns of behavior, themselves reflective of the underlying structure of the system being studied. Help managers recognize patterns of behavior that are already present in their organizations. Effective tools in answering the question “Why do we keep seeing the same problems ?” Useful for planning Used to test policies and structures under consideration may be altering the organizational structure

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 4 Patterns of behaviour Seeing reality systematically is seeing circles of influence rather than straight lines – avoiding linear thinking. Every circle tells a story, by tracing flows of influence, you can see patters that repeat themselves, time after time making situations better or worse To follow the story, start at any element and watch the action. Start with the action being taken by the decision maker.

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 5 The Archetypes 11 Archetypes are generally acknowledged as forming the set of tools that reveal patterns of behaviour in systems 1. Limits to Growth (Limits to Success) 2. Shifting the Burden 3. Shifting the Burden to the Intervenor 4. Eroding Goals 5. Escalation 6. Success to the Successful 7. Tragedy of the Commons 8. Fixes that Fail 9. Growth and Underinvestment 10. Accidental Adversaries 11. Attractiveness Principle

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 6 Instructions : This Assignment (Question 1 & 2) will be done in groups. Each group will have at most 3 members. Each group will prepare a 5 Page Report and at most 6 slides. The presentation of the slides will be done by all the three members of the group and members must show a clear understanding of the archetype. First slide should have the following (System Archetype, Names, Course, Option & Reg Nos.). A soft copy of the report on the diskette should be submitted with the report. Presentation will be on the 30 Sept, 2005 during the lecture. Question 1 : Each group will be given a system archetype from the list given. For each archetype the following are to be presented :- A diagram showing the generic archetype Clear description of the archetype Symptoms of the archetype Action to be taken by Management At least 3 clear, well explained examples of application of the archetype relevant to the Ugandan situation.

Simulation & Modeling Week – The System ArchetypesSlide 7 Question 2 Find a Public Policy Problem that relates to the archetype you were assigned, either in fact or in people’s perceptions. Sketch version of the diagram made specific to the problem you have selected. You may have to add one or two elements to the diagram for clarity but your goal is to produce a problem specific diagram that vividly has the same structure as the generic archetype. Write a brief statement to accompany your diagrams which includes :  A statement of the public policy problem  A description of how the archetype applies  Any structure/ behaviour insights the archetype surfaces in the problem
