Intro to Hyperbolas Today, we will learn the standard form of the equations for hyperbolas, their characteristics and how to graph them.

Patty Paper Hyperbolas Trace a small circle in the center of your tracing paper. It should not extend close to the edge of the paper. Draw a point outside the circle. Fold the waxed paper so that the point touches the circle. Crease and fold. Fold the waxed paper again so that the point touches the circle a few millimeters from where it touched the first time. Crease and fold. Repeat until you have touched the point to the circle (and creased all around the circumference of the circle.

Analysis What conic section have you formed? What would be a good definition for this conic? Why did the folds you made end up forming this conic section? What would happen to the shape of the conic section if your point were closer to the circle? Farther away from the circle?
