Memory Processing The process of forming and storing memories is complicated. – There are 2 essential parts of memory processing: 1.Memory Registration 2.Memory Recall

Memory Registration Information that gets into your brain. This is often difficult for survivors of brain injury and may appear as though the person has trouble with remembering information when in fact the issue is that the information is not being “registered” or “stored” properly in the brain. Therefore if the information is not stored or recognized properly it cannot be remembered be recalled.

Improving Memory Registration Create a daily schedule. Use an alarm for reminders. Use pill boxes marked with days of the week/time of day. Write down important information in one place. Repeat tasks if necessary. Work on one thing at a time. Use visual clues or label items if necessary.

Memory Recall Retrieving stored information from your brain.

Improving Memory Recall Check your organizer, calendar, or to do list first thing in the morning. Pick specific places for important items and always store them there. Jog your memory by checking lists throughout the day. To remember a word, situation, or place: – Describe or define the word you’re trying to use. – Visualize the situation or place & try to remember what time of day it was or what the weather was like. Take breaks!

Conclusion Develop routines and lists and check them daily. Try to work one step at a time. Reward yourself for every successful task completed! Be patient with yourself and forgive yourself for not being perfect. It’s OK not to remember everything. Everyone uses memory aids in some fashion and it’s totally okay!
