Presented by Christine Buckler, ITL Module Engineer Instron Material Testing Machine

Load Capacity 50 kN (11,250 lbf) ▫ 5 kN (1,125 lbf) load cell also available upon request Test Speed.001-500 mm/min (.00004-20 in/min) Total Crosshead Travel 1135 mm (44.6 in) Width between columns 420mm (16.5 in) Instron Material Testing Machine

Tensile Compression Bending Testing: Types of Forces

Tensile grips Compression plates Bending fixture (3 or 4 point) Rope grips and adapters (official set at Idea Forge) Tools in top drawer ▫ Allen wrenches ▫ Spanner wrench (to loosen lock nut) ▫ Clevis pins ▫ Grease May need to loosen locknut before able to line up clevis pin holes Fixtures, Adapters and Tools

Old or New style grips Flat or Round Range of Sample Diameter or Thickness Coarse or Fine grit (teeth per inch) Good surface contact between sample and jaws! Tension Grip Jaw Options

Don’t over loosen grip faces!

Measures change in length Useful for stress-strain measurements Epsilon 3542 Axial Extensometer ▫ Gauge Length: 1.000” ▫ Measuring Range (compression/tension): -0.050/+1.000” or -0.250/+0.250” Always stop test before failure point! VI setup for extensometer channel and data Extensometer

Notify Module Engineer if error message or issues! ▫ Check E-Stop ▫ Never turn off Instron machine Able to jog after clicking RUN (white arrow) Toggle between units 3 ways to stop test Setting test parameters ▫ Crosshead direction (up = +, down = -) Zero before tightening 2 nd grip to account for preload LabView Program

Stop VI Right click, Exit Log off computer When you are finished, note that you should never turn the Instron OFF. This can cause loss of firmware and break the machine. When you’re done testing…

Swipe BuffOne card for training confirmation and login access “Access” does not mean “Anytime” Meet with Module Engineer in advance ▫ Review test plan and setup ▫ Reserve time Research $35/hour ▫ pay online ITL website Future Testing
