Writer’s Workshop: Overview

 “The Size of the World”  BIG Question: How did the narrator of this story demonstrate being a risk taker and what were the outcomes of the risk?

 Narrative Hook  Transition into Thesis Statement: Essential Background info  Thesis statement (last sentence in your intro paragraph)  Introductions MUST have the author’s name and title of the story.

 Reveal action  State a fact  Shocking line!  Sensory detail!!!!  Ask a question

 Thesis should be the answer to our BIG QUESTION In Jeff Greenwald’s introduction to “The Size of the World”, he risks the comforts of modern travel and with this determination, he learns to slow down and rediscover a larger, more mysterious world.

 Must begin with a clear topic sentence that DIRECTLY supports the thesis.  Quotes must support topic sentence and be connected to thesis.

 Narrative Hook: With the creature comfort of airplanes, it takes only hours to get across the globe; however, what is lost in that process?  Transition: Traveler Jeff Greenwald, on a recent trip to a Nepal village, asks that same question.  Thesis: Greenwald, author of “Size of the World” risks the comforts of modern travel and in turn, learns that we can rediscover a larger, more mysterious world.

 Topic Sentence: Greenwald was compelled to risk the ease of modern air travel for a more authentic experience; Through taking a risk, Greenwald’s goal was to reassert the awe back into travel.

 Topic Sentence #1: Greenwald was compelled to risk the ease of modern air travel for a more authentic experience.  Topic Sentence #2: Through taking a risk, Greenwald’s goal was to reassert the awe back into travel.

 Topic Sentence #1: Greenwald was compelled to risk the ease of modern air travel for a more authentic experience. ◦ “ But the culture of air transportation, so sanitized and monotonous, dulled my edge” (3). ◦ “The essential quality of travel had been been lost” (3).  Topic Sentence #2: Through taking a risk, Greenwald’s goal was to reassert the awe back into travel. ◦ “I wanted to travel forward, without a return ticket, and let topography of the planet’s sphere carry me back to the place I had started from” (3).

 Restates thesis statement (in a new way)  Continuity with the introduction While not everyone is able to afford the time to travel the world without airplanes, Greenwald does make the reader question his/her own travel philosophy. Perhaps to give up a plane seat, to slow down, as the author did, is a sure way to restore the magic and help understand the power of the present moment. Greenwald’s risks seemed to result in exploration with new eyes.
