Beginning Terms 1. Aperture – the mechanical opening in the lens that lets light in. 2. ASA / ISO – rating given a camera or film showing its sensitivity to light. 3. Auto focus – camera or lens that focuses itself.

Beginning Terms 4. Bit – binary digit. 5. Bit depth – the color capacity of a pixel; for every bit, a pixel can carry one color. 6. Bitmap – an image or graphic onscreen bit by bit…a very large file!

Beginning Terms 7. Byte – eight bits equal one byte. 8. CCD – Charged Couple Device ; converts light into electrical current. 9. CMOS – Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor that converts light to electrical current.

Beginning Terms 10. DPI – dots per inch; refers to the measure of detail on a printer. 11. Driver – software that communicates between two devices (a printer to a computer). 12. GIF – Graphic Image Format; a lossless file compression.

Beginning Terms 13. Gigabyte – 1,000,000,000 bytes, 14. JPG – Joint Photographic Experts Group designed this standard lossy compression file.

Beginning Terms 15. Kilobyte – 1,000 bytes. 16. Megapixel – the measurement of a CCD field that totals more then 1,048,576 pixels. 17. Megabyte – 1,000,000 bytes.

Beginning Terms 18. Pixelation – a special effect that produces small square or rectangles on an image..a result of low resolution. 19. PPI – pixels per inch; measure of image resolution. 20. Resolution – detail.
