Algebra Readiness Chapter 2 Section 6

2.6 Finding Reciprocals Two nonzero numbers whose product is 1, such as 2/9 and 9/2, are reciprocals. Every number except 0 has a reciprocal. To find it, write the number as a fraction, and then flip it over.

Example 1: Writing the Reciprocal of a Fraction Write the reciprocal of 2/3. 3/2 Write the reciprocal of 5/6. 6/5 Write the reciprocal of 2/7. 7/2 Write the reciprocal of 8/9. 9/8

Example 2: Writing the Reciprocal of a Whole Number Write the reciprocal of 9. First: 9/1 Then: 1/9 Write the reciprocal of 2. First: 2/1 Then: 1/2 Write the reciprocal of 13. First: 13/1 Then: 1/13 Write the reciprocal of 1. First: 1/1 Then: 1/1 = 1

Example 3: Writing the Reciprocal of A Mixed Number Write the reciprocal of 2 ¾. First write it as an improper fraction. 11/4 Then, flip it over. 4/11 Write the reciprocal of 1 7/8. First write it as an improper fraction. 15/8 Then, flip it over. 8/15

Example 3 continued. Write the reciprocal of 4 2/9. First write it as an improper fraction. 38/9 Then, flip it over. 9/38 Write the reciprocal of 10 1/5. First write it as an improper fraction. 51/5 Then, flip it over. 5/51
