Significance PLOT THEME
Desdemona want’s to support Cassio which makes their relationship closer Iago convincing Othello that Desdemona is sleeping with Cassio is working because of Desdemona and Cassio’s relationship Iago takes past experiences of Desdemona and twist them into evidence that she is cheating on him Iago’s Goal: Convince Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio THEME Your best friend/the closest people to you are the ones who can deceive you. Don’t be fooled if your best friend is untrustful Reputation
3
SIGNIFICANCE CHARACTER SETTING
Othello is very trusting toward Iago and never questions him Othello is very insecure and feels he is not good enough for Desdemona (age difference and skin colour) Iago is very stealthy in the way that he tricks and convinces Othello Desdemona is too shy to speak her mind and explain herself SETTING Takes place after Cassio’s drunken incident. Othello and Cassio are not on good terms Iago figures that Othello is at a weak spot right now and is easier to manipulate
4
SIGNIFICANCE MOOD The audience can feel the frustration within Othello, especially when he is being consistently given more reasons to believe Iago’s stories about Desdemona cheating on him The mood is curious throughout parts on the play because the audience is always questioning how far Iago will go with this lie. Tense because the tension within Othello needs to build up in order to reach Iago’s goal of destroying Othello
5
TIMELINE -Most important - Iago’s plan comes together
Cassio lost his position in the military due to a fight Cassio asks Desdemona to ask Othello to reinstate him Iago plants ideas into Othello’s head about the“affair” Othello asks Desdemona about the handkerchief Othello starts to believe that Cassio and Desdemona really are in a relationship
6
DRAMATIC TECHNIQUE Dramatic Irony: (theater) Irony that occurs when the meaning of the situation is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play The reader/audience is aware of Iago’s plan while Othello and other characters are not. The reader/audience understands the story behind the handkerchief and how it ended up where it did. However the characters do not know, therefore it adds suspense to the story. Dramatic irony is present when Desdemona assures Cassio that his and Othello’s friendship will be as good as it was before. (“will have my lord and you again as friendly as you were” (line 6-7). Another example is how the characters in the play are blind to “honest” Iago’s manipulation; only the audience knows his true nature.

SYMBOLISM, IMAGES & MOTIFS
Forgiveness and loyalty Desdemona shows loyalty to Cassio in time of conflict Cassio proves his loyalty to Desdemona Cassio’s work is important to and wants Othello to forgive him Othello thinks Iago is being loyal to him and telling him the “truth” about Desdemona Symbols: Handkerchief Willow song Candle

RHETORICAL AND LITERARY DEVICES
Metaphors “ Her name, that was as fresh as dian's visage, is now begrimed and black..” (Act 3, scene ) - This is a metaphor because Othello is saying that Desdemona’s reputation is as white as snow Allusions “As Dian's visage” (Act 3, scene 3, line 442) - Othello is making a reference about Desdemona to the goddess of chastity Dramatic Irony -"I think thou dost; and for I thou'rt full of love and honesty..." (Act 3, scene 3, line 135) -This is ironic because Othello believes Iago to be an honest man when in reality Iago is scheming against him and lying constantly.

QUESTIONS/ISSUES Does Othello’s race have an impact on his insecurities and unfaithfulness of his and Desdemona’s relationship? Why do you think Othello eventually accepted Iago’s suspicions instead of disregarding them? What is the purpose of Iago involving the majority of the characters in his plan to destroy Othello?
