4 The Patapsco River The Patapsco River is a 39-mile-long river in central Maryland which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The river's tidal portion forms the harbor for the city of Baltimore. The name "Patapsco" is derived from the Algonquian pota-psk-ut, which translates to "backwater" or "tide covered with froth."

5 The Chesapeake Bay An estuary lying inland from the Atlantic ocean between the States of Maryland and Virginia. The word Chesepiooc is an Algonquian word referring to a village "at a big river." Over 150 rivers and streams flow into the Chesapeake bay The Chesapeake

9 Words to Know 1.An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water where fresh water from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean. Estuaries are areas of transition between the land and the sea. They are often called bays, harbors, inlets or sounds. 2.A watershed is an area of land that drains to a particular river, lake, bay or other body of water. Watersheds are sometimes called “basins” or "drainage basins.” 3.An ecosystem is a complex set of relationships among living and non-living things. Air, water, soil, sunlight, plants and animals – including humans – make up an ecosystem. Ecosystems can be as tiny as a patch of dirt in your backyard, or as large as the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed. 4.Plankton are free-floating, mostly microscopic plants, animals and bacteria. They generally cannot swim; instead, plankton are transported by tides and currents. The name plankton, like the word planet, comes from a Greek term meaning "wanderer.“ 5.Salinity is a measure of the amount of dissolved salts in the water. It is usually expressed in parts per thousand (ppt), or the number of grams of dissolved salts present in 1,000 grams of water. 6.The organisms that live at the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay and its streams and rivers are known as benthos. 7.Water clarity is a measure of the amount of sunlight that can penetrate through the water. In general, clear water is an indicator of a healthy Chesapeake Bay. 8.Scientists use a device called a Secchi disc to measure water clarity. A Secchi disc is a simple, black-and-white circle attached to a rope. 9.Invasive species are plants and animals that have been introduced, whether accidentally or on purpose, into their current habitat. Invasive species can cause harm when they establish themselves at the expense of native plants and animals, encroaching on their food or habitat. Blue catfish, the northern snakehead and zebra mussels are three invasive species that can be found in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. 10.Bay grasses are plants that grow underwater. They provide wildlife with food and habitat, add oxygen to the water, absorb nutrient pollution, trap sediment and reduce erosion.
