Gathering Information You are already experts at gathering information. This year we have used books, magazines, web sites, glossaries, and tables of contents to find information. Match the tool to the job below. Gathering Information Pre-Test Let’s see what you already know about tools, or resources to find and gather information. Take the quick matching quiz, then let’s go over our answers. We will take this quiz again at the end of the week, so be ready!

Gathering Information You can also use many resources to find and gather information. An atlas is a book of maps. An almanac gives information about the weather and the Moon, Sun, and stars. An encyclopedia is a book that gives information about many subjects. Sometimes they do not have current information.

Dictionaries Let’s take a closer look at dictionaries. Dictionaries can give you several facts. 1. What words mean. 2. How to say words. (pronunciation) 3. Where words come from. (origin) Dictionaries are organized in alphabetical order. Dictionaries have guide words to help you find the word you need. 1.Guide words are at the top corner of the page and tell you which words are first and last on the page. 2. Words that come between these words are in ABC order on this page.

Dictionaries Pre-test Let’s see if you can put words in alphabetical order and find which guide words a given word would be found. Take the quick scavenger hunt quiz, then let’s go over our answers. We will take this quiz again at the end of the week, so be ready! In today’s small groups, one of the centers will be locating words between guide words, and placing words in alphabetical order. Tomorrow we will also work on definitions.

Whole Group Reading: Characters and Setting Characters: Pre-test Let’s see if we can unlock the keys to this character before we reading the story together. Then, let’s read our story together and see which predictions seem true. As we continue to study this character during the week, our ideas about the character may change!

Whole Group Reading: Characters and Setting Setting: Tells the reader when and where the story happens. It is the time period and place in which the story occurs. Sometimes the setting can be in many different places! Where have some of the stories you have read taken place? When have they taken place?

Whole Group Reading: Characters and Setting Setting: Look at the pictures that might be found on the cover of a book. What can you guess about the setting of these stories?

Centers: Remember to turn your work into the basket signing your work with your name and date! Basket 1: Pull a spelling task card and complete the activity. Do this at least 2 times! Basket 2: Dictionary Dilemmas! Answer the questions found on the index cards. Use the picture dictionary to help you gather your information! Basket 3: Abraham Lincoln Mini-Book: Color, cut, and staple the pages of your mini-book in order. Then share your book with a partner at your center! Basket 4: Meet with Ms. Carmelita to read aloud your small books. Basket 5: Hot Dots Cards: Take turns reading aloud the card and choosing the hot dot. Share your answers.
