1 KAYLYNN ROBERTS Racism in Today’s World

2 Reflection Paper 1 I have decided to do my project on “What Racism looks like in Today’s World”. I feel that as the world has become more developed and more equal we are facing different challenges with racism. We are no longer faced with whites and blacks not being able to sit on the same side of the bus, go to the same school, or drink out of the same drinking fountain. We are facing much more subtle acts of racism. In the world we are now seeing individuals being questioned on a daily basis about their religion, sexual preference and even political choices. Most people would respond that racism does not exist anymore when faced with the questions. I am looking forward to further researching this topic and finding out other ways that racism has evolved over time. I am interested to learn what other examples I can find that do not just have to do with skin color. We also see racial issues arise with Middle Eastern people since the threat on 9/11. There are so many examples of racism in today’s world and I look forward to further researching those.

3 Research Question How has racism evolved over time?

4 Book Race and Racism: The Development of Modern Racism in America, by: Richard J. Perry  This book discusses how racism has changed through time, it discusses the Jim Crow Laws and also what racism is like today. This book examines the development and origins of racism in North America, it looks into the biology of human variance and human evolution. Richard Perry does a good job of making the reader interested in the subject matter and helps to make it easy to understand as he shares examples throughout history. This book put into perspective these times and what the minorities would have to endure, and how it is changing.

This article was very interesting and helped me to better understand the wide spread racism.

It talks about how race was invented along with the modern era and talks about “dark matter” or those who were darker of that time, didn’t matter, or were unimportant. This article helped me to understand how awful the fact that people of color felt that they were of no use to society.

8 Reflection Paper 2 After doing research and reading more about racism in America today, I came to more fully understand what it means. Racism is more than skin color; racism can be tied to religion, culture, background, and many other different things. Racism has become something that gets brushed under the rug. Those individuals that grew up in a time when it was more blatantly obvious now face hardships because of that. They have continually been treated like they are the minority. As I was reading an article it was talking about how racism is something that many people say is “getting better”, the article went on to talk about how the kids now who are facing racism do not understand that things are better, are things really better or are they just different? In my opinion, things are definitely getting better as time goes on, but there are still issues that exist today. I really enjoyed getting to research this topic and learn more about how racism has evolved over time.
