1 Written Hazard Communication Program What are the requirements

2 Hazard Communication Program  Employers must develop, implement, and maintain a written hazard communication program for their facility.  A copy of the program should be made available to employees upon request.  Should inform employees exactly what you are doing to comply with regulations.

3 List of Hazard Chemicals  Employer must establish a list of hazardous chemicals  List must identify each chemical and be referenced to a MSDS sheet or label  Put list in some type of order for easy access  List must be compiled for entire facility or broken down to work area

4 Labels and Other Forms of Warning  Employer must designate a person responsible for implementing program  Description of labeling system, inspection procedures and labeling guidelines

5 Material Safety Data Sheets  Name a person responsible for obtaining and maintaining MSDS  Procedures used in obtaining MSDS Procedures when shipping and attaching an MSDS to it MSDS for products already received  Procedures for updating MSDS files for new MSDS received  Where MSDS will be located and instructions on finding specific MSDS

6 Employee Information and Training How will you comply with training requirements  Designation of responsible person for conducting training  Outlining of training program and subject trained as required  Procedures for training new employees  Procedures for retraining-- state implemented programs are different than Federal programs. Usually retraining is done annually

7 Method of Informing Employees about Non-Routine Tasks or Change of Job  Inform employee of hazards associated with non-routine tasks  Inform employee when he/she changes jobs/departments of hazards associated in area, including chemicals in the workplace

8 Notification of Outside Contractors  Need procedures to notify on-site contractors and their employees of potential hazards that may exist in work area  Location of MSDS of hazardous chemicals used at your operations  Appropriate protective measures to take when working in area  Contractor must also notify company of any hazardous chemicals they might bring on-site, including a copy of MSDS for that chemical

9 Other State Requirements  California- Proposition 65, requires the state to publish chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. It requires that businesses provide a clear and reasonable warning before knowingly and intentionally exposing anyone to a listed chemicals.  24 States, have their own standard which are identical or stricter than Federal OSHA
