Unit 4 Seminar 1. More practice with paragraphs 2. APA, Paraphrasing, and Quoting

Any questions/issues before we begin. This week we will discuss APA, why we use it, and how to use it correctly. Before we begin, I’d like to work with a few paragraphs from our Unit 3 assignment.

Three-part paragraph structure Remember that paragraphs need to have at least three kinds of sentences: Topic sentence Supporting sentences Concluding sentence

Sample Paragraph 1 What is this paragraph missing? In 1955 black people had no civil rights. In Montgomery, Alabama the civil rights movement was just beginning to come to a head. Black people were segregated, forced to use separate bathrooms, and would not even be served in restaurants. Can you imagine walking into a building and knowing every eye in the place was on you, hating you, just because of the color of your skin? Do you know what it’s like to be told to sit in the back of public transportation so as not to be seen, to be treated like cargo and not a human? How can we add what’s missing?

Sample Paragraph 2 Let’s look at this paragraph: I think courage means that you stand up for what you believe in and you’re not scared but brave. Crossing the threshold is when you do something big and it sticks out every time you hear about it. I chose Dr. Martin Luther King as my historical figure. He was a brave man with a lot of courage and he wanted everyone to be treated equally. He didn’t care what happened as long as he fought for what he believed in. He was arrested, his home was bombed, and he endured personal abuse. On April 4, 1968 he was assonated on the balcony of his hotel room. Does this use the three-part structure?

, do you have any questions or comments about our work so far?

What is plagiarism? What is plagiarism and how can it be avoided? Styles of citation- APA, MLA, ASA, AMA. We use APA at Kaplan University. Using a good reference for citation.

Why is citation required in two places? Citation is required in two places– as in-text citation and references page citation. Some of the basics of in-text citation. What we need to include for references page citation. Let us get some citation practice.

What is paraphrasing? What is paraphrasing and why is it necessary? What is the correct way to paraphrase? Why should we use more paraphrasing than direct quotes in our papers? Let us get some practice paraphrasing.

How we integrate quotes into our writing. Using a signal phrase or sentence to introduce our quotations. Block quotes– what are they? Long and short quotations

Any remaining questions and concerns? Looking at this week’s work.
