1 Idioms and Analogies Do Now #6 Identify the following types of figurative language:  My heart is made of stone.  Your smile is the light of my life.  Her hair is like a sea of pearls. Today’s Objective: Students will apply their knowledge of figurative language by taking notes, Reader’s Workshop, and working collaboratively with 90% accuracy. Today’s Standards: Reading 1.1 Identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes in prose and poetry.

3 Figurative Language An idiom is an expression that has a meaning different from the usual meaning of the words. Example: It is raining cats and dogs outside. An analogy is a way to compare things. The comparison has to do with the relationship between the two words. Example: school:students as hospital:patients red is to color as square is to shape

4 Reader’s Workshop: Idioms and Analogies As you are reading today, try to find an idiom or analogy in your book. If you can not find either, make one of your own based off of your book. Be ready to share your sentences and whether each is an idiom or analogy by the end of the reading time. We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.
