2. Today’s Bellwork:  Take out your Genesis packets.  On the front of your sheet, answer the following questions:  In your own words, define what a summary should do.  In your own words, what is characterization and how do we look for it?  On the back of your sheet, draw a line down the middle of your paper (see example below). Using your knowledge of Chapter 2 in Genesis, complete the following: 1. On the left side, write down key words that add to the overall character of God in Genesis Chapters 2. On the right side, list the qualities or attributes that those words suggest.  Ex: Words/Evidence:Characteristics/Suggested Qualities: 1. “and it was good” 1. proud, confident, gracious 2. “ 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd …day”2. ordered or structured

Allusion: definition and example  Definition:  n. a passing reference, without explicit identification, to a literary or historical person, place, or event, or to another literary work or passage.  Note: the use of allusion implies that you share knowledge with the author (i.e. you’ve read the same books) Ex. Allusion: "Life is no 'brief candle' to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment; and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.“ Reference: Shakespeare’s Macbeth: “Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player. That struts and frets his hour upon the stage. And then is heard no more: it is a tale. Told by an idiot.”

4. Example:  “Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree is a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves…”  Allusion to?  Gettysburg Address, Abaraham Lincoln

5. Denotation and Connotation: Defintions  Denotation:  n. the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests  Connotation:  n. an idea or feeling that a word suggests in addition to its literal or primary meaning  Ex. Herron High School:  Denotation: A place of learning in Indianapolis  Connotation?

6. Symbolism: definition and example  Symbolism:  n. a word or phrase that signifies an object or event (denotation) which in its turn signifies something beyond itself (connotation). Rose: n. a prickly bush or shrub that typically bears red fragrant flowers, native to north temperate regions. Cultural Symbol? Love, Passion, Lust etc.

7. IP:  Read Chapters 3, 4, and 5 of Genesis  On a separate sheet of paper, complete the following: Write a brief summary (no more than a paragraph) for each chapter. Using evidence, write a brief character profile for Cain, Noah, and Life after the fall. Explain how “Cain” and “rainbow/bow” are symbols.
