1 Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway Company Line built through St. James in 1899. Regular trains not operated until June, 1900. In the early days, 2 passenger trains & 1 local freight in each direction offering 6-day per week service. Through traffic was basically not handled on the line. In the late teens or early 20’s passenger service was cut back to 1 train in each direction, 6 days/week. Passenger service was converted to a gas car around 1930. Snow blockages were relatively common during the winter months. For many years local freight service was provided by the “North to Alaska Job” out of Estherville, Iowa. North – Mon, Weds, Fri; South – Tues, Thurs, Sat. The M&StL applied to abandon the line in 1947. Passenger service discontinued on December 28, 1947. C&NW purchased M&StL on Nov. 1, 1960
