Write everything in BROWN

Buildings Roads Bridges Concrete Extract minerals – like iron (Fe) to make steel Salt Decorations Jewelry

1. Explain the rock cycle? A continuous process that causes rock to change from one form to another.

2. Rock Any solid mass of minerals or mineral-like matter

3. Do most rocks occur as one mineral or as a mixture of minerals?

4. Some rocks are made of non- mineral material, can you name one?

Coal

Draw the rock cycle in your science notebook. 1 2 3 4 5

The Rock Cycle is a group of changes, this change does not necessarily have to be a chemical change. Igneous rock can change into sedimentary rock or into metamorphic rock. Sedimentary rock can change into metamorphic rock or into igneous rock. Metamorphic rock can change into igneous or sedimentary rock. Almost all of rock today that we have on earth is made up of all the same stuff as the rocks that dinosaurs and other ancient life forms walked, crawled, or swam over Over time rocks are recycled into other rocks Moving tectonic plates are responsible for destroying and forming many types of rocks

List the 3 types of rocks List the 3 types of rocks

In what ways are the two rocks similar? Look at the granite rock and the rhyolite rock GraniteRhyolite

15. In what ways are the two rocks different? GraniteRhyolite Granite – coarse texture, made from magma Rhyolite – fine texture, made from lava

16. What causes the two rocks to be different? GraniteRhyolite Granite – Slow cooling below the earth’s surface Rhyolite – Quick cooling on the earth’s surface

Classifying Rocks Rocks can be classified by looking at the rocks texture, mineral composition, and color.

Slow cooling magma will form rocks with a a. coarse grained texture. b. fine grained texture. c. glassy texture. d. porphyritic texture. Question

What is texture? The size, shape, and pattern of the rock’s grain (nice) Glassy

The minerals that make up the different parts of a rock Composition (what it is made of?) Examples are: Quartz Feldspar Magnesium Iron

Bet Cha’ Weren’t Expecting A…. POP QUIZ!!!!!* ①W①W hat are the three types of rock? ②W②W hich type of rock has been formed by magma or lava? ③W③W hat do we classify rocks by? ④N④N ame the sedimentary rock listed in this powerpoint. ⑤M⑤M etamorphic rocks are rocks that have ___________ from the original parent rock. ⑥G⑥G ranite and rhyolite are both what type of rock? ⑦W⑦W hat does “ignis” mean in the word igneous? *WRITE QUESTIONS IN YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK!

ANSWERS!!!! 1. Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic 2. Igneous 3. Texture, Color, and Mineral Composition 4. Coal 5. changed 6. Igneous 7. “ignis” means fire
