Below is an FCAT 2.0 Ruler.

Measure starting from the edge of the ruler rather than at zero. In real life rulers may vary and the measurement may start at the edge of the ruler, or it may begin in a bit like the ruler below. So it is important to always look at the ruler prior to measuring.

Look carefully at the problem you are solving. Do you need to measure in inches or centimeters? “Which side of the ruler should we use to measure for this problem?"

Identifying the Whole Unit What do these whole numbers mean? When we jump from one whole number to the other we are jumping/measuring one whole unit. One Whole Unit

Identifying Fractional Parts of an Inch: ½ We are going to mark our rulers in ½ inch parts. Use a blue marker or crayon to mark the ruler to the nearest ½ inch.

Identifying Fractional Parts of an Inch: ¼ Our ruler is marked in blue to the ½ inch. Now we are going to mark it in ¼ increments. You will do this with a pencil when you use rulers in class and will also use this strategy when you take the FCAT.
