Name something that is alive…
2
All living things have the same 5 characteristics
3
--- Cells: All Living things are made of cells
Unicellular = made of one cell Can you think of any??? Multicellular = made of 2 or more cells Prokaryotic cells (prokaryotes) = do NOT have a nucleus Eukaryotic cells (eukaryotes) = has a nucleus
4
Single-Celled Organisms
Paramecium Protist Streptococcus pyogenes Source: Source: Source:
5
It’s cellular!
6
--- All living things reproduce
Asexual: Reproduction without the aid of another individual Reproduction by splitting or budding Sexual: Two cells from different individuals unite to form a new organism (fertilization)
7
Asexual
8
Sexual
9
--- Growth and Development
Living organisms go through a development period, aging period, then death determined by their genetic code (DNA)
10
--- All living things use energy
Anabolism: Synthesizing complex substances from simpler ones Creating glucose from water and Carbon dioxide Catabolism: The breaking down of complex substances into simpler ones Digestion The combination of these in a living organism is called METABOLISM.
11
How do we get energy? People take chemical energy (food) and change it to heat and mechanical energy Called Cellular Respiration Plants take light energy (sun), and change it to chemical energy (sugars) Called photosynthesis
12
--- Living Things Respond To Their Environment
Homeostasis: Maintaining a stable internal environment (ex. body temp) Living organisms are constantly reacting to different stimuli (heat, light, pressure, etc) Examples Sweating Goosebumps Vomiting
13
In order to be considered LIVING, it is a must that an organism possesses ALL of these 5 characteristics, not just some
14
Needs of Organisms Water: can’t survive without it
Food: need a source of energy to survive Living space: need a place to get food, water, and shelter
