4 Purposes of the Academy To help leaders of mathematics education succeed in their role of planning and carrying out wide-scale changes at all levels of the education system. To assist leaders to gain knowledge, skills, and strategies for initiating, implementing, and sustaining educational improvements that help all students learn. To build a strong, supportive, and ongoing learning community for leaders of mathematics education.

11 Your Learning from Session 1 With an “elbow partner” flip through the Learning Links and select 1-2 to discuss: –What did you learn? –How did you implement what you learned? For people new to your team, use the Learning Links to orient them to the content of Session 1 Identify 1-2 unfamiliar Learning Links and predict what you think it means and how it fits into Session 2

12 Session 2 Goals Learn to design mathematics professional development to achieve specific goals and purposes Learn tools and strategies for managing effective mathematics discussions in professional development Develop ideas for selecting and using worthwhile mathematical tasks for professional development Build a repertoire of strategies and facilitation moves to achieve a quality mathematics professional development program Explore key elements of effective co-facilitation Network with other Academy participants and staff

14 Clarifying Staff Roles During Case Discussions, staff will engage as learners with Academy colleagues. Susan and Kathy will also support Cathy Carroll’s facilitation. During District Planning and District Reflection, staff will negotiate with each team: –Facilitator –Moderator –Note-Taker –Observer/Listener –Other….
