The Periodic Table

Define the following terms. 1. Proton 2. Neutron 3. Electron 4. Nucleus

1. Protons: Positive charge 2. Neutron: Neutral 3. Electron: Negative Charge 4. Nucleus: Center of atom

Why is it appropriate to say that atoms are the “building blocks” of all matter?

Many periodic tables look different but still contain similar information.

1. Atomic Number  Number of Protons  Number of Electrons  Number of Protons = Number of Electrons 2. Chemical Symbol: Letter(s) that represent the element (Always begins with a capital letter). 3. Atomic Mass: Number of Protons + the Number of Neutrons in one atom of the element (an average).

Exploring the Periodic Table Identifying chemical symbols and elements

Oxygen Find the chemical symbol for oxygen.

H Find the element represented by the chemical symbol above.

Carbon Find the chemical symbol that represents the element above.

S Find the element represented by the chemical symbol above.

Phosphorus Find the chemical symbol that represents the element above.

N Find the element represented by the chemical symbol above.

Journal Entry  Draw the table below in your notebook and complete themissing boxes within the table. Element NameChemical Symbol Helium Fe Hg Boron Sodium Xe
