2 Ike’s Domestic Social Policies: Civil Rights Movement Origins traced to movement of African Americans leaving the South and heading North We fought for democracy in the world, but didn’t hold true at home Ike was not a firm believer in civil rights and did little to protect them Brown v Board (1954) More on this later…….

3 Ike’s Cold War Policies Massive retaliation=greater reliance on nuclear weapons & their threat, reliance on air power, spend less on “traditional” army -1953 H bomb!-SU 1955! Secretary of State John Foster Dulles’ foreign policy=brinkmanship Mutually assured destruction? MAD Why did foreign policy change so much under Ike? How do you think people responded? What message were we sending?

4 US-Soviet Relations Ike presents Atoms for Peace plan: to educate America on hopes of nuclear energy future and built nuclear reactors in Iran and Pakistan Big Four: Eisenhower, Eden (GB), Bulganin (SU), Faure (FR), Khruschev too –Geneva Meeting,1955, 1 st summit since Potsdam In Feb. 1956, Khrushchev denounced Stalin, “peaceful coexistance” with West Maybe the Cold War will end….

5 Khrushchev and His Threats But in Moscow, 1956 at the Polish Embassy Khruschev exclaimed ”WE WILL BURY YOU!” How can he ask for peaceful coexistance when he says this?

8 Khruschev’s Demands… In 1958 K. continues to demand the US withdraw from West Berlin. He states he is willing to end the Cold War is the US does this. Eisenhower refuses Eisenhower asks K. to visit the US to defuse the “Berlin Crisis” K. visits in 1959 (inc. Iowa!) and they meet at Camp David peacefully where they agree to more talks in Paris the next year Hmmmm……will the Cold War end now?
