SWBAT: identify actions to protect Lake Michigan Homework: write out rough drafts for water essay Catalyst: 4/22-5/3 (#56) Identify each of the contaminants that we have read about as either point source or non-point-source contamination. 1.Hexavalent Chromium 2.Medications 3.Industrial Sludge Handouts: Water Conclusion Organizer (#61) Point Source Non-Point Source

We will be back in the computer lab tomorrow. It will be your last day of class time to work on the paper. The rough draft of the paper is worth 50 points and is due Thursday by midnight.

Actions to Protect Our Water Source 1.Reduce water use during storms  reduces sewer overflows that contain untreated, polluted water

Actions to Protect Our Water Source 2.Don’t flush unused medications chemicals down the toilet.  wastewater treatment plants do not remove all of these chemicals, so they end up in waterways with the treated wastewater

Actions to Protect Our Water Source 3.When possible, use non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners, shampoos, soaps, etc.  prevents toxic chemicals from entering the wastewater so that they don’t end up in local waterways  Encourages industry to produce more environmentally-friendly products

ACTION 1: Reduce water use during storms HOW DOES THIS ACTION HELP TO PROTECT THE WATER SOURCE? Reduces sewer overflows that contain untreated wastewater (b/c of combined sewer system) There are many ways to help protect Lake Michigan, Chicago’s water source. One way to do this is to reduce water use during storms. This helps to stop sewer overflows, which can result in dumping polluted wastewater into the lake.
