Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk BTEC IT Unit 09 - Lesson 05 Evidencing P1 / P2

Session Objectives Understand the requirements of assessment tasks P1 and P2 for this unit, Understand what evidence is required to meet P1 and P2.

P1 Requirements P1 requires you to describe the different types of network available and the technologies, standards and protocols which support each, You will need to focus on the three types of network: WAN, LAN and PAN. These are the supporting technologies / standards / protocols which could be utilised by each type of network: Technologies e.g. frame relay, MPLS, ATM; logical and physical topologies e.g. star, bus, ring, mesh, tree; network access methods eg Ethernet, CSMA, Token passing; network models e.g. OSI 7 layer, TCP/IP  Network protocols and standards: types e.g. TCP/IP, AppleTalk, UDP, 802.2, 802.3, FDDI, 802.5; wireless technologies e.g. 802.11, infrared, Bluetooth, 3G; factors affecting range and speed of wireless technologies

P2 Requirements P2 requires you to describe why different network standards are necessary, This will normally be covered whilst completing work for P1 however its needs to be overt, Ensuring these questions are answered during P1 will ensure the content is properly covered: Why is TCP/IP used on this and any network instead of another protocol suite? The benefit of the WAN standard, The benefit of the LAN standard, What protocols are used on WAN? What protocols are used on LAN?

Evidence for P1 / P2 will probably by a report. This essay structure may help: Title: Types of Network and The Technologies, Standards and Protocols Which Support Them Para1:What Is A Computer Network Para2:Types of Network and Supporting Techs, Stands, Protocols Para3:Notes on TCP/IP – Why used instead of IPX/SPX, AppleTalk Para4:Notes of application layer protocols – why we need them / how used Para5: Diagrams showing the use of different network types, technologies, standards and protocols in real life. Network TypeDescriptionTechnologies & Standards UsedProtocols Used WAN LAN PAN WAN Description xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Technologies & Standards Used xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Protocols Used xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Table or paragraphs Include within the description benefits and limitations of the network type State why each different technology, standard, protocol is needed Evidence

Programming Constructs For P1, describing networks, protocols and standards, learners could produce a report using diagrams. For P2, learners should be able to demonstrate they understand why different network standards and protocols are necessary. Examples given should be realistic. This can be linked to P1. P1 – Describe the types of network available and how they relate to particular network standards and protocols P2 – Describe why different network standards and protocols are necessary P1 – Describe the types of network available and how they relate to particular network standards and protocols P2 – Describe why different network standards and protocols are necessary

TCP / IP What is it Suite of protocols which allow communication and data transfer between devices to take place. 4 layers (application, transport. Internet, data link) - communication seems to takes place at the same layer of each machine e.g. application layer on one machine talks to application layer on other Why – Its universal – No bridging required = less hassle Device independent Platform independent Why not AppleTalk Developed by Apple only for apple = device dependant & platform dependant May get around it with bridges but hassle Why not IPX / SPX Used on Novel NetWare systems = platform dependant but device independent as Novell provides clients for different devices – fine for LANs Not used on internet as not all servers NetWare – can use bridges but adds complexity

Application Layer Protocols Describe what each of these protocols is for and how they are used HTTP / HTTPs FTP / TFTP SMTP / IMAP / POP3 NTP TELNET RDP DNS DHCP SNMP ICMP (actually internet layer but allows user to instigate a PING or a TRACERT)
