© Services GmbH Conclusions 2/5/2016 1 St. Petersburg, May 18, 2011 Dr. Andrey Girenko www.giraf-pm.com

© Services GmbH Conclusion 1 2/5/2016 2 It is the European Union’s Science and Technology Strategy - not your personal one! Try to find your niche….

© Services GmbH Getting started… 2/5/2016 3  It is not a pro-active process. You will respond to the calls in the Work Programmes of the Themes and other areas  Look for the niche offering you can provide - it must be something really special  Read the calls very carefully - many proposals fail on “relevance”  It is highly competitive  Remember it’s all about S&T excellence – normally it’s not a capacity building programme  The FPs are not the only S&T tools in the world - make your choice  The project must be part of your strategy - you will be putting your own funds in (Simple test…)

© Services GmbH Finding partners… 2/5/2016 4  Projects are consortium driven…  Projects are usually built around previous projects and consortia, traditional partnerships  Join projects headed by a good, experienced project leader (“champions”)  Use all the mechanisms - your own links, NCPs, previous projects in the FPs, mobility funding and NoEs to build networks, - get connected!  When you have identified partners and begun a discussion try to meet a coordinator face-to-face…

© Services GmbH Project preparation… 2/5/2016 5  Read the documents. Be aware of implications!  Avoid being a sub-contractor unless this is conscious decision as part of your learning process  Make sure that all the people in your organisation know about the proposal and its implications eg Director, Finance, HR, Strategic Manager, legal office (you may have to sign NDAs at this stage)  Be aware of the IP issues  Be aware of the financial issues  Be aware of the time between submission and beginning of a successful project, typically >12 months (resource implications)

© Services GmbH Why should I do it?! 2/5/2016 6  Develop your expertise base and that of your colleagues  Great opportunities for HRD  Enhance the S&T capacity of your team/organization/country  Create networks that allow you to do other work - Europe and globally  Funding is not the reason to carry out EC projects, but it leverages our investment, you must ensure that you can fund your participation Being a partner in a EU research project – it is a “quality label”
