2 Innovation

3 What is innovation? Innovation is not invention. It also requires: Understanding customers’ needs. Working with partners to deliver innovation. Paying for itself over time. Innovations need to “earn their keep”. Return value to the enterprise. Be self-sustainable. Very little innovation is truly “new”. Usually, innovations require an elegant combination of things that already exist. The most powerful innovations look beyond products. They encompass: New ways of doing business. New systems of products and services. New interactions and forms of engagement with customers. “Innovation is the creation of a viable new offering.” Larry Keeley, Ryan Pickel, Brian Quinn, Helen Walters, Ten Types of Innovation: The Discipline of Building Breakthroughs “Any combination of activities or technologies that breaks existing performance tradeoffs in the attainment of an outcome, in a manner that expands the realm of the possible.” Michael Raynor, co-author of The Innovator’s Solution The convergence of health care trends, Innovation strategies for emerging opportunities, Deloitte Centre for Health Solutions © 2015 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited
