2 Catholic Church during the Renaissance The Catholic religion was the religion before renaissance. During renaissance the Catholic Church was more relaxed about wedding ceremonies. Provided education for people in need during renaissance.

3 Protestant Religion during Renaissance Protestant Religion founded by Martin Luther. Originally called Lutheranism,but other sects developed. Used humanism and personal growth as a drive to reform Catholic Church.

4 Differences between Catholic & Protestant Religion Catholic Accepts the theory of Evolution Rejects death penalty Place total authority with the Pope and Magesterium. Catholics teach that the bread and wine become the body, blood, soul, and divinity. Protestant Rejects Evolution theory Encourages idea of the death penalty Place authority with the Christian individual and their interpretation of the Bible. Protestants teach that the bread and wine are symbols of Jesus’ body and blood.

5 Cathedrals During Renaissance Cathedrals were constructed in a Romanesque and Gothic theme. Cathedrals are known for their high ceilings and large domes. Interior designs of sculptures, paintings, etc. are found in renaissance cathedrals. Used for mainly religious purposes.

15 Types of Popular branched Dramas Tragedy- Usually portrays the downfall of a major role or character. Most of the time results in death. Comedy- A light drama where characters have persistent problems that they eventually overcome. Problem Play- A play that shows the social or economical negativities in present day life. Farce- A funny compilation of wrongdoings and complications that have no respect for human values.

16 Types of Popular Branched Dramas (cont.) Comedy of Manners- Portrays rich or well-off citizens and their materialistic or fashionable lives. Fantasy- A play where an author can choose what happens in the storyline without any regards to scientific or logical fact. Melodrama- Does not include literary value, but is more related to a farce with the exception that its purpose is more of to thrill the audience rather than make them laugh.

17 Types of Academic Branched Dramas Medieval Mystery Plays- Dealing with spiritual or Biblical ideas and myths. Chronicle Plays- Plays that portray times or reenact things that have happened in history up to that point in time. Masques- Due to spiritual ideas, this kind of play is usually made in song and involves a lot of music and dancing.

19 Examples of Famous Play Writers William Shakespeare- One of the most famous play writers in all of history. Built the Globe Theater twice. Famous for his Romance playwrights such as Romeo and Juliet. Ben Jonson- Famous Comedy writer. His most famous work is called Volpone, or The Fox(1606)
