3-1: LINES AND ANGLES BY GARET HOLLOWAY

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: NOT ALL LINES AND NOT ALL PLANES INTERSECT. DefinitionSymbolDiagram Parallel Lines- are coplanar lines that do not intersect. The symbol ‖ means “is parallel to.” ↔ FE ‖ ↔ GD ↔ FA ‖ ↔ GB Skew Lines- are noncoplanar lines; they are not parallel and do not intersect. ↔ FG and ↔ BC are skew Parallel Planes- are planes that do not intersect. Plane FGBA ‖ Plane EDCH

PRACTICE PROBLEM Instructions: In the figure, assume that lines and planes that appear to be parallel are parallel. A: Which segments are parallel to ‾ RS? B: Which segments are skew to ‾ TU? C: State two pairs of parallel planes?

ANSWERS A: ‾WX, ‾UT, and ‾ZY B: ‾RW, ‾SX, ‾XY, and ‾WZ C: Plane RSTU ‖ Plane WXYZ Plane RSX ‖ Plane UTY

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: WHEN A LINE INTERSECTS TWO OR MORE LINES, THE ANGLES FORMED AT THE INTERSECTION POINTS CREATE SPECIAL ANGLE PAIRS. Transversal- is a line that intersects tow or more coplanar lines at distinct points. The diagram to the right shows the eight angles formed by the transversal t and lines m and n. Angles 3, 4, 5, and 6 lie between lines m and n. They are interior angles. Angles 1, 2, 7, and 8 lie outside of m and n. They are exterior angles.

ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: PAIRS OF THE EIGHT ANGLES HAVE SPECIAL NAMES AS SUGGESTED BY THEIR POSITIONS. DefinitionExample Alternate Interior Angles- are nonadjacent interior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal.  4 and  6  3 and  5 Same-side Interior Angles- are interior angles that lie on the same side of the transversal.  4 and  5  3 and  6 Corresponding Angles- lie on the same side of the transversal in corresponding positions.  1 and  5  4 and  8  2 and  6  3 and  7 Alternate Exterior Angles- are nonadjacent exterior angles that lie on opposite sides of the transversal.  1 and  7  2 and  8

PRACTICE PROBLEM Which pair of angles are corresponding angles? Which pair of angles are alternate interior angles? Which pair of angles are alternate exterior angles? Which pair of angles are same- side interior angles?

ANSWERS 1.  2 and  6  4 and  8  1 and  5  3 and  7 2.  3 and  6  4 and  5 3.  1 and  8  2 and  7 4.  3 and  5  4 and  6

LAST PRACTICE PROBLEM The link to the right gives an example of two story problems that shows how lines are parallel. https://youtu.be/EitYU_rrqI0
