3 Volleyball History Originated in the U.S. in 1895 Created by William G. Morgan, a YMCA instructor in Holyoke, MA A “volleyball” was designed in 1900 United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) was formed in 1928 First World Championships held in 1949

4 Recent Volleyball History Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1964 NCAA added volleyball to their program in 1969 Association of Volleyball Professionals was formed in 1983 The World League was created in 1990 2-person beach volleyball was added to the Olympics in 1996

5 Who’s Playing Volleyball A 1999 study showed: 19,052,000 Americans played volleyball at least once per year 3,932,999 played frequently (25+ times per year) 75% of players are under age 35 The Midwest has the largest regional share of players More women than men are playing

6 Where can you play? The local Recreation Commission sponsors leagues for men, women, and co-rec of varying skill levels and ages The YMCA sponsors a league Schools offer intramural leagues Many local businesses sponsor sand-leagues
