2 D EFINITION Set of rules enforced by one who runs a network, website or a large computer system that sets restrictions on how the network, website or system is to be used. NO!

3 W HY ? The Internet may have useful information but it also contains many inappropriate pages with documents, files and images that are unsuitable for children Implementing these acceptable use policies protects the schools from anything the students, teachers or staff might access

4 S CHOOL R IGHTS While on computers with an accessible use policy the users have no rights to privacy The monitor of the system has the right to access, look at, copy, keep or delete any file on the computer

5 U NACCEPTABLE Harming others, or damaging anyone else’s property Using, posting or distributing profane, lewd, vulgar, threatening, or abusive The accessing, using, posting or distribution of obsene, illegal or dangerous acts Spamming Violating copyright laws Plagiarizing Gaining or attempting to gain unauthorized access Changing someone else’s password Attempting to log in through another person's account Trying to gain access to sites or files that are blocked or filtered Accessing, keeping, or changing someone else’s files without their permission

6 F ILTERING Going along with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), many schools block or filter content on the internet deemed inappropriate

7 P ROTECTION OF I NFORMATION The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) prohibits Department school officials from disclosing personally identifiable information from education records of students and families to third parties without parental consent.

8 S TUDENT I NTERNET S AFETY School Responsibilities Schools should inform students, staff and teachers on appropriate online behavior Schools should protect the safety and security of minors when using all forms of direct electronic communication Schools should provide parents, students, staff and teachers with guidelines and instructions for Internet safety Students Using Internet Systems Must not reveal personal information about themselves or Should not meet in person anyone they have met only on the Internet. Should immediately tell their teacher or other school employee about anything that is inappropriate Should not allow computers to save their passwords. Teacher’s responsibilities Teachers should educate students about appropriate and safe online behavior

9 V IOLATIONS OF P OLICIES Schools have the right to terminate any user’s access to the computers and the Internet If a student violates this policy, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken consistent with the school’s If a student’s access is revoked, the student may not be penalized academically

10 N ETWORK E TIQUETTE Users are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to, the following: Be polite Use appropriate language Do not reveal the personal information of yourself or others Realize the anything sent or posted on or over the internet is not private
