3 Setting goals helps athlete (Amezdroz et al, 2010) Achieve more steadily Improve quality of training Increase motivation to achieve Increase satisfaction with performance Improve performance

4 Types of goals Focus on the result by comparing to other players Most goals / catches / passes / intercepts Outcome Goals Concentrate solely on comparing performance with previous performance Increase goals / catches / passes / intercepts Performance Goals Focus on technique of performance rather than the overall result Slow play; pivot to pass; step back from under net Process Goals

5 Which goals to set? Combination of all three Emphasis on outcome goals may cause anxiety & stress

6 Goal setting Set difficult but achievable goals Aim just above current performance level Reassess goals at regular intervals Reset goals if initial goals were too high or low Keep you heading on the right course Write them down where you can see them and reward yourself when achieve them

7 Whichever type of goal an athlete decides upon, have to include S.M.A.R.T.E.R.
