2 2 Background Government agencies are among the largest employers in the United States In 2009, 49,200 Oregonians were employed by agencies that are covered by the Pubic Employees Benefit Board (PEBB). An additional 51,200 Oregonians are employed by agencies that are covered by the Oregon Educators Benefits Board (OEBB). Almost all these employees are eligible for health insurance through PEBB or OEBB. Public employees are more likely to have health insurance than private sector employees

3 Oregon BRFSS Survey of State Employees (BSSE) Designed and funded by PEBB, OEBB and Heath Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention (HPCDP) Section Conducted with PEBB enrollees via telephone in 2005, 2007, and 2009-2010. OEBB began surveying enrollees in 2009 State Agency Population –Department of Human Services, Transportation, Corrections –Approximately 80 different agencies represented OEBB Population –Administration and teachers –Community Colleges –District and Education Service District Employees 3

9 Discussion State agency employees are a disparate population in several key areas of health Having access to health benefits does not guarantee good health Oregon may already be paying higher health care costs for its employees We’re succeeding in tobacco prevention. Obesity prevention identified as priority areas for worksite interventions 9
