Cryptography Cryptography: It is the the art of keeping the information in messages secret Cryptanalysis: the art of breaking cipher text Cryptology: the mathematics field that cryptography and cryptanalysis belong to.

Terminology Encryption: process of encoding a message so that its meaning is not obvious Decryption: the reverse process Plain text: the original message Cipher-text: the encrypted message

Eg. Multimedia Security Applications 1. E-Commerce use Digital Signatures to ensure authenticity, and security in sales and purchase between parties. 2. E-Sign is used to provide assurance of identity. 3. DVD’s use content scramble system (CSS) to protect movies from theft of images. 4. Audio – Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI)- use water marking techniques. 5. E-mail- use PGP, pretty good privacy, public key encryption. Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension(SMIME)- provide an automated and secure way to transport email between systems.
