Randolph Caldecott Medal Award Abegail Prado & Sherone Barnes

Introduction

Each year an illustrated children's book determined to be the most "distinguished" in terms of excellence and appeal to children is chosen as winner of the Caldecott Award Medal.

Brief History

Who is Randolph Caldecott? (1846-1886) He transformed the world of children's books in the Victorian era. His illustrations for children were unique to their time in both their humor, and their ability to create a sense of movement, vitality, and action that complemented the stories they accompanied.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal In 1937, René Paul Chambellan designed the Caldecott Medal. The bronze medal has the winner's name and the date engraved on the back. Caldecott Medal inscription reads, "Awarded annually by the Children's and School Librarians Sections of the American Library Association."

Frederic G. Melcher He was the co-editor of Publishers Weekly in New York City and founder of Children's Book Week and established the Randolph Caldecott Award. He was concerned that the artists creating picture books for children were as deserving of honor and encouragement as were the authors of children's books.

Who gets this award? This medal is to be given to the artist who had created the most distinguished picture book of the year and named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph J. Caldecott. The idea for this medal was also accepted enthusiastically by the Section for Library Work with Children of ALA and was approved by the ALA Executive Board. The Caldecott Award was established after the Newbery Award.

Illustrations Erin Stead employs woodblock printing techniques and pencil. The figures are detailed with light, delicate lines. Colors were used sparely – mostly muted green, brown and yellow.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee It is a picture book of rare elegance. Events unfold slowly in the story The gentle tone of the story and the thoughtful, lyrical writing compels the reader to slow down.

Special Quality It has the capacity to encourage readers to suspend disbelief. The whole story seems true. Not only that, the story is a sweet statement about the importance of friendship.
