1 st 9 weeks Review Scientific Method, Characteristics of life and Ecology

Scientific Method Two groups of grizzly bears want to find out which is the best way to catch fish. Group A will do it the “old-fashioned” way and catch them with their mouth as they go up the river. Group B wants to use empty honeycombs as containers to catch the fish as new technique. They do the experiment 5 times. Group A catches 20 fish and group B, 30.  Which is the control group?  Which is the experimental group?  What is the constant?  What is the independent variable?  What is the dependent variable?  What is a quantitative observation?  What is a qualitative observation?  How many trials were in this experiment?  Write a hypothesis based on this experiment.

ANSWERS  Control: group A – catch with mouth (nothing different, “old fashioned way”  Experimental: group B – catch with honeycombs (different, experiment)  Constant: catching fish – THIS is the same situation for both groups  IND. Variable: method of catching fish/honeycombs (will affect the outcome)  DEP. Variable: number of fish caught (AFFECTED by the IND. VAR.)  Quant. Observations: 2 groups of bears, 5 times, 20 fish, 30 fish  Qualit. Observations: grizzly bears, empty honeycombs, new technique  Trials: 5  Hypothesis: “If the bears use the honeycombs, they will catch more fish” “ If the bears use their mouth, they will catch more fish”

Characteristics of Life What are the 6 characteristics that ALL living things must have?  One or more cells  DNA  Reproduce  Respond to stimulus  Use energy  Grow and develop

One or more cells  Unicellular  Multicellular DNA  Genetic material

Reproduce  Asexual reproduction  Sexual reproduction Respond to stimulus  Stimulus cause reactions  Maintain homeostasis – keep internal state the same

Use energy  Making food  Breaking down food  Moving things into and out of cells  Building and repairing cells Grow and develop  Single cell: get larger, then reproduce  Multi-cell: increase in number of cells
