DO NOW FRIDAY Describe what you think are the correct parts of a data table.

Parts of a Correct Data Table 1.Title including independent and dependent variables 2.Independent variable on left side and dependent variable on right side. 3.Headings on all columns 4.Units of measurements included in headings ONLY

Graphing is an essential tool in science. Graphs enable us to visually communicate information. Our goals for graphing: Understand the various types of graphs Decide what kind of graph would be best to use based on data collected. Identifying data to be displayed on the x- and y- axes Scaling a graph properly Labeling a graph with axes labels, title, units and legend or key if necessary

Group Activity 1.As a group, come up with a survey question. Ex. What is your favorite food? 2.Make a data table to collect your data. 3.Collect data for this question from your group and from ten other people in class. YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES FOR THIS. 4.Make a circle graph. *Use colors and a KEY*

DO NOW THURSDAY 1.Which kind of music do most students prefer? 2.Which kinds of music make up a total of 25% of the students’ preference? 3.If there are 750 students at this school, how many students prefer alternative?

The steepness of the line shows how quick or gradual the change is. Flatter line = Gradual (slower) change Steep line= Faster change

Line Graphs Make a line graph from the following data and fill in the missing numbers using interpolation and extrapolation. Remember, a good graph TALKS.) Weight (lbs)Length of Spring (in) 08 212 4?? 518 6??

(measurements) Exact numbers DO NOT have significant digits. Measurements DO!!

Significant Digits How do we determine the number of significant digits in a measurement?  KEEP IT ON THE “D-L”….. o No, not Down Low, DECIMAL LEFT. When the measurement has a DECIMAL, start counting from the LEFT side. When the measurement doesn’t have a decimal, then start counting from the right. o What do I mean …..count??? o I’ll show you!
