2 Writing to Divide and Classify The term division refers to any piece of writing that intends to break a subject down in to smaller units. The term classify refers to grouping the units together by common traits and discussing the traits of each unit. Division takes a general concept or topic and creates smaller subcategories. Classification takes individual examples and groups them based on common traits. Division is important because it breaks a complex subject into parts that are easy for a reader to grasp. Classification is important because it organizes a large amount of material for the reader.

3 Applying this Mode to the Senior Capstone Think of the field of study or career you have chosen to research. Can it be broken down into smaller categories? Ex: Culinary – executive chef, sous chef, pastry chef Then can you break those categories down and explain them? Ex: Duties – executive chef, sous chef, pastry chef Which sources can you use in the mode? What additional research might you need to do? Your research paper must contain one section that focuses completely on division and classification.
