Design Brief TJ501 VELS Learning Level 4 Science / Design, Creativity and Technology Robert Powell

The Problem We have a group of passengers stuck on one side of a lake. Your team needs to move them to the other side, without any of them getting wet. “We are your passengers”

How will your team keep them dry on the trip across ??? How will your team move the passengers across the Water ??

How will your team get the transport vessel to move?

The Problem. continued… We need something that moves across water and keeps the passengers dry. We need some form of forward propulsion Either:- Wind, Motorised (no batteries), or Another of your creation.

The Rules Judging Day will be in 6 weeks. Teams consist of Groups of 3 – 5 students. Categories will be: Fastest across the lake, keeping the passengers dry Best overall design, Most sea worthy Most like the design (model looks like the design drawing) Original design

The Rules. Cont…. The team must act safely at all times. Use what the class has learned from the excursion to the Maritime Museum. Move from one side to the other, without a push or batteries. Practical design and style.

Technology Process Evaluation Investigate Produce Design

Research the different aspects of your teams boat. Use any source your team can think of, here are some suggestions: – the School Library –Books –Magazines –Use the Internet. {click to go to Google.com}Use the Internet Investigate

Floatation - How different objects float. Floatation Size – Hull Design Size Propulsion - Different methods of moving on water Propulsion Investigate

Investigate different forms of … Floatation and stability Can your team think of others!

Investigate different forms of … Hull Design Hull Shapes Can your team think of others!

Investigate different forms of … Propulsion Can your team think of others!

Materials to evaluate Can your team think of others! Boxes Bottles Other Containers

Equipment Available Can your team think of others! Stanley Knife Masking Tape Glue Pens Rubber Bands Paper

DESIGN the PLANS Working in your teams. On a piece of paper draw a design of your transport vehicle. The Design is to include :- Measurements Materials Equipment needed

Produce Your Transport Build your team transport using the design your team has drawn

Test and Evaluate Does the vessel float? Does it move by itself? Does it move across the lake?

Test and Evaluate Will it support the weight of the passengers? Does it keep the passengers dry?

Congratulations Judging Day. Mr Man will be judging the best boats, and timing the trip across the lake (room 3 fish tank) Categories: Fastest across the lake, keeping the passengers dry Best overall design, Most sea worthy Most like the design (model looks like the design drawing) Original design

VELS Learning Level 4 Science Learning Focus: –They link cause and effect, and how using force produces motion. They design and build models to demonstrate the application of science concepts. Standards: –Science knowledge and understanding. Students explain change in terms of cause and effect. They qualitatively describe changes in motion in terms of the forces present. –Science at work. They build and design simple models and write an account of the science that is central to explanation of the model. VELS (Science) Website

VELS Learning Level 4 Design, Creativity and Technology Learning Focus: –Explore concepts about design, materials / ingredients and systems, and consider how these can be combined in innovative ways to create solutions. Standards: –Investigate and design. Teams use a range of methods to research and collect data in response to design briefs. –Produce. Use their production plan and select and work safely with a variety of materials and systems components to produce functional products and/or systems. –Analysing and evaluating. Students reflect on their designs as they develop them and use evaluation criteria, identified from design briefs, to justify their design choices. –VELS (DCT) WebsiteVELS (DCT) Website
