7 The Request; Luke 9:37- 40 On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. A spirit seizes him; Revelation 20:1-3 He is my ONLY boy Only begotten – μονογενης monogenes; John 1:14, 18, 3:16, 18; 1 Jn 4:9; Col 1:15 The Disciples (the 9) could not cast it out Why? Luke 9:1

8 The Rebuke, vv. 41- 42 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. Who is Jesus talking to? The whole crowd, including “the 9,” Matthew 17:19-20 Unbelieving = faithless Perverted – perfect, PASSIVE participle (a people who are being mislead); Phil 2:15 Why does He say this? Perhaps the majority of the crowd was unsaved? They all needed a lesson in “present tense grace,” Colossians 2:6-7

9 The Bible and Present Tense Grace Progressive revelation – more information is revealed as we move through the Scriptures chronologically. Old Testament examples of walking in present tense grace Numbers 11:10-17; 27:15-18 The Judges Isaiah 63:10-14 Ezekiel 11:19-20; 36:26-31 Zechariah 4:6 New Testament examples Gospels – Mark 9:22-24; John 15:1-8 Transition period – Acts 6:3; 7:55; 13:52 Epistles – 2 Pt 1:1-3; Galatians 2:20-21; 3:3; Phil 4:13; Romans 8; 1 Cor 15:10

10 The Revelation, vv. 43-45 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement. The people are amazed But! Don’t get too comfortable Jesus is going to die, then the apostles are going to need to apply this lesson It was concealed from them Not a salvation statement. (Mark 16:15) God has concealed many truths, they are called “mysteries”
