Naming Unsaturated Hydrocarbons Aliphatic Alkenes
2
Alkenes At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. Define an alkene 2. Name, write and draw various alkenes

The IUPAC Rules Double bonds are named using an –ene ending. More than one double bond will have a –diene for two, –triene for three, etc. Double or triple bonds are given priority for the lowest numbers before substituent groups. The longest chain must include the double bond.

The Scientific Method begins with Questions about the World Around You. Ever Wonder Why?... you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

You Might Be a Hittite If… Your wife can climb a tree faster than your cat. You have a complete set of salad bowls and they all say "Cool Whip" on the side.

Euphemisms in Science We all know that some politicians and government spokesmen use certain euphemistic phrases to give an aura of respectability to descriptions of events or actions which would be offensive when expressed in plain English. The following is a list of Euphemisms in Science and their translations into plain English. “These results will be reported at a later date...” I may get around to this!

Alkynes At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. Define an alkyne 2. Name, write and draw various alkynes
19
The IUPAC Rules Triple bonds are named using an –yne ending. More than one triple bond will have a –diyne for two, –triyne for three, etc. Double or triple bonds are given priority for the lowest numbers before substituent groups. The longest chain must include the triple bond

Alkyne Nomenclature Hexyne 2-hexyne 3-hexyne

23
Name These Alkenes/Alkynes from Page 26:4 1.Longest chain = Cyclohexene 2.Lowest number for –ene, therefore, start from lower right corner and go counterclockwise 3.Methyl and propyl at 4.3 position 5.Methyl is first in the alphabet 6.3 – methyl – 3 – propylcyclohexene
