3 A Definition of Globalisation  Globalisation describes the process of change that places, people and businesses around the globe are experiencing, because the world is becoming more and more interconnected.  This increasing interdependence is far reaching and involves social, economic, political, technological, cultural and ecological dimensions.

5 When did it begin?  The concept became popular in the 1980s but it is a historic process which began during early trade and exploration. As the speed of communication (sail ships vs. the internet) has increased, so has the rate of globalisation.

7 Globalisation as an industrial Process: TNCs This interconnectedness enables companies to operate internationally. These companies produce goods in many countries around the world, and then sell them on to many more countries in addition to these. These companies are called TNC's or Transnational Companies.  Task: List 5 TNCs. “5 TNCs are…”

9 What are the basic characteristics of TNCs?  A company that sources, manufactures and sells goods or services in more than one country.  They shift their income to where tax is lowest.  They locate production in areas where labour is inexpensive and neither well organised nor protected.  They may operate globally, but their action can have an impact on local geography.
