Associative Property MGSE9-12.N.CN.2: Associative property (addition, subtraction and multiplication)

What is the Associative property?  The associative property states that you can add or multiply regardless of how many numbers are grouped. In other words, if you are adding or multiplying it does not matter where you put the parenthesis.  Ex.

Associative property of multiplication  (a × b) × c = a × (b × c)

Associative property of addition  (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

Associative property of Subtraction  The associative property DOES NOT work with subtraction.  The associative property is able to regroup or rearrange the order of terms, and will still balance to equal the same things on both sides.  Subtraction will not allow the same number on the same side

Associative property using Complex and Imaginary numbers?  Addition Ex. (2+3i)+4i=2+(3i+4i) 2+7i = 2+7i  Multiplication Ex. (2i)(3i4i)=(2i3i)(4i) (2i)(12i 2 )=(6i 2 )(4i) (2i)(-12)=(-6)(4i) -24i = -24i

REVIEW  What is the associative property?  Are you able to do subtraction with the associative property? If yes why? If no why not?  Give me an example of a associative multiplication or addition problem that balances on both sides.
