1 Properties Associative, Commutative and Distributive

2 Associative Property The associative property allows you to group numbers differently and still get the same result. For example: Associative Property of Addition: (9 + 6) + 4 = 9 + (6 + 4) Associative Property of Multiplication: (9 * 6) * 4 = 9 * (6 * 4) Note: The associative property does not work for subtraction or division (9 - 6) - 4 = 9 - (6 - 4) 3 - 4 = 9 - 2 -1 = 7 (9 / 6) / 2 = 9 / (6 / 2) (1.5) / 2 = 9 / 3 0.75 = 3

3 Commutative Property The commutative property allows you to change the order of the numbers and still get the same result. For example: Commutative Property of Addition: 6 + 4 = 4 + 6 Commutative Property of Multiplication: 6 * 4 = 4 * 6 Note: The commutative property does not work for subtraction or division 6 – 4 = 4 – 6 2 = - 2 6/ 4 = 4/6 1.5 = 2/3 (or.6667)

4 Distributive Property The distributive property is mostly used to multiply an number through a parenthesis containing addition or subtraction Distributive Property: 10(6 + 5) = 10(6)+10(5)
