3 Desegregation After WWII, TV replaced radio as the main means for communication. During the Civil Rights Era TV and photojournalism informed millions of Americans about the Civil Rights movement and the struggle for equality. These images live on today. Authors of historical fiction typically look to photographs and film for information and inspiration.

4 The Task: You are a young adult author. Your agent has just contacted you to write the exposition (setting, character, and maybe hint at the conflict) to a new historical fiction novel for teens that is set during school desegregation.

5 Civil Rights Photos As a young adult author researching the Civil Rights Era, record observations about each image you might use as the basis a story. Remember to record sensory details about sight, touch, taste, feel, or sound. Turn and Talk: What were they thinking or feeling? What might happen next?
