2 doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/1259r0 SubmissionSlide 2 Abstract Yunlu Liu (China Mobile) Nov 2012 With the increasing wide use of WLAN, APs are densely deployed, which introduces several problems, such as coverage overlap, lower accessibility, smaller throughput, and so on. It’s hard and costly to check these problems manually. We suggest to study on how to check these problems automatically.

3 doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/1259r0 Submission Nov 2012 Yunlu Liu (China Mobile) Slide 3 Current situations (1) CMCC has deployed 3 million APs –Most of the CMCC APs are deployed densely at the hotspots, e.g., airport, shopping mall, etc. In 2012, more than 17% of the cell phone throughput in CMCC network is from WLAN –Only three non-overlapping channels are available in 2.4GHz ISM band: the channel conflict is a big issue In the CMCC network, the growth rate per month of the WLAN throughput is keeping 18% from the start of 2012 –Increased number of STAs: hard to connect to an AP and data congestion may happen.

4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/1259r0 Submission Nov 2012 Yunlu Liu (China Mobile) Slide 4 Current situations (2) As analyzed previously, under dense deployment of APs, many problems, e.g. coverage overlap, lower accessibility, smaller throughput etc., may happen at any time. However, it’s hard and costly to manually check these operating problems. –These problems can be checked by drive tests, however, the cost of tests, including both economical and environmental cost, should not be ignored. Furthermore, there are some areas where hard to do the tests..

5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/1259r0 Submission Nov 2012 Yunlu Liu (China Mobile)Slide 5 Proposal We think it’s very important for operators to check the problems automatically and fix them as soon as possible to improve the user experience. Therefore, we suggest to introduce measurement reporting at STAs in WLAN. −The measurements at the STAs can include but not be limited to: signaling quality, multiple AP information (how many APs on the same channel, the signaling strength of multiple APs), abnormal disconnection, failed association. − The STAs report the measurement results to the network monitor system via APs. − The Analysis of the information on the network monitor system can help check the operating problems. e.g., STAs collect multiple AP information, i.e., how many APs on the same channel, how many APs with strong strength. STAs then send the information to the network monitor system via AP. The network monitor system analyzes the information to tell if there is heavy coverage overlap, e.g., if more than x APs with strong signaling strength detected by one STA.
