oneone CS-4A Objective: To explore properties of matter in order to identify useful properties for identifying samples of matter. CSI Note: What properties of matter will be useful in identifying the unknown substance? Drill: 1. Get a lesson ditto from the set. 2. Complete the Drill in your Drill Book.

oneone CS-4A Question: What things make your examples of matter different from each other?.

oneone CS-4A Brainstorm with your team to create a list of characteristics that can be used to distinguish between two samples of matter. (for example: color) LET’S SHARE

oneone CS-4A temperature hardness taste color state of matter solubility mass smell flammability magnetism shape size radioactivity elasticity texture density freezing point boiling point

oneone CS-4A Properties A property is a trait that is used to describe a substance or object based on its observable characteristics. There are some properties that can change for a given substance. Ex. mass There are other properties that remain constant for a given substance. Ex. magnetism

oneone CS-4A Think about people. Identify something about a person that can change naturally. Identify something about a person that does not change naturally.

oneone CS-4A Characteristic Properties A property that remains constant for a given substance is a characteristic property. Characteristic properties are good for helping to identify a substance. Two substances that are different can share some characteristic properties. Ex. Two different substances can both be silver. However, the characteristic properties of two samples of the same substance must be the same. Ex. All samples of water must be colorless.

oneone CS-4A Look at your list from #2. Circle the characteristics that you believe are characteristic properties.

oneone CS-4A HOMEWORK: When you are given your unknown substance, what might you do to try to identify it?
