7 Factors in Teen Violence Factors affecting the rise in teen violence include: Media images The influence of gangs The availability of weapons By age 18, a child will have witnessed as many as 200,000 acts of violence on television.

8 Gangs, Weapons, and Drugs: A Vicious Cycle Most gangs that have guns buy them illegally, often with money made through drug trafficking. gang A group whose members often use violence or take part in criminal activity drug trafficking The buying and selling of drugs

9 Gangs, Weapons, and Drugs: A Vicious Cycle In a recent year: 17% of high school students carried a gun, knife, or other weapon. Another 25,000 young people were injured by guns. In 2001, 5,486 young people were murdered. 79% of these deaths occurred as a result of gunshot wounds.

10 Gangs, Weapons, and Drugs: A Vicious Cycle One national survey found that 85 percent of violent teens reported using marijuana. A person under the influence of a drug is more likely to commit acts of violence in order to get money to buy drugs.

11 School Violence Many schools have adopted a zero tolerance policy to the problem of violence. zero tolerance policy A policy that makes no exceptions for anybody for any reason

12 Preventing Violence Develop your own personal zero tolerance policy. Tips for Preventing Violence Encourage others to resolve conflicts peacefully. Be a role model for nonviolence. Report anything you see or hear that may lead to violence.
