Review of Unit 3 There are many ways to work with young children and their families and many ways to make a difference. Last week we explored center-based careers and enjoyed a visit from our trusted friend Spartacus and learned tips on taking notes and taking tests. Does anyone have any questions? Thoughts? Ah ha moments?

Please remember that our class runs from Wednesday through Tuesday! ALL work for unit 4 is due on Tuesday at midnight! This week you will: Complete the Readings – Enjoy a visit from Spartacus Complete the Learning Activities Share and participate in the discussion Complete two graded reviews And either attend Live Seminar or Complete Option 2. Any questions? Unit 4– Things to do!

Unit 4: Home-based Careers Just like center-based careers there are many home-based careers too. We will start with family childcare. In most states, family childcare is grouped into two categories: exempt and regulated family child care. In addition, a home-based career could include working as a nanny or au pair or even as an online professor. This week we will explore the many home-based early childhood careers. In addition, to learning about home- based careers, Spartacus will share tips on reading comprehension. ! Are you ready to begin?

Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Discuss a home-based career within the early childhood development field Identify the importance of reading comprehension in the field of child development

Types of Home Based Careers I’ll list each of them… as I do… share what you know about each – just jump in! Exempt Family Childcare Homes Non - Exempt Family Childcare Homes Non-Exempt Family Group Homes Nannies Home-school Parent Online College Professor Did I miss any?

Field Trip For this discussion you were asked to complete an Internet search (a Google video search or searching YouTube may be your quickest option). Find a professional video on the day in the life of an in-home career related to child development. You can choose any of the careers listed in our reading, or you can think outside of the box. Watch the video and share the link with the class. Share what you found interesting and unique about the career choice that you searched. Would you consider this career? Why or why not? Does anyone have any questions? Comments?

Let’s Pretend… Imagine you are a childcare nanny. You are caring for and teaching two young children. Their mother is hearing impaired and her speech is limited. She hired you because a relative of hers recommended you, but you do not understand sign language. Mom writes you daily list of activities that she would like completed each day along with special requests on feeding, routines, and such. So… in addition to being able to care children it is important that you comprehend what you read!

Let’s Share What is reading comprehension? Why is reading comprehension is important when working as an early childhood provider? Share an example of when you would need to comprehend what you read when working in a home based career.

Just a Few Reminders… Please be sure to read the announcements that I post in class. If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing projects or participating in the class, please contact me as soon as possible as I do worry about my students. Know that I am only just a message away – and that your success is my success and that is one of my passions!

Graded Reviews This week you will have two graded reviews. Please use the readings as well as the tips from Spartacus to assist you in answering the questions. Take your time, you have two hours to complete each review.

Educational Quote Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school. ~Albert Einstein
